虽然，格里罗的硬汉形象深入人心，但这位年过半百的大叔在梦想的道路上也是摸爬滚打，终于大器晚成。
格里罗1965年出生于美国纽约布朗克斯区，是意大利移民的后裔，在家里的3个孩子中排行老大~在纽约大学读的商科，还在华尔街工作了一阵。
Born in 1965, Frank Grillo originally hails from Bronx, NY. A son of Italian immigrants, and the eldest of three, he went to New York University and earned business degree before briefly working on Wall Street.
格里罗曾向媒体透露，自己毕业后就决定要做演员，但这是他的小秘密，他跑去学表演，还接拍广告。不过接广告主要是为了不用去华尔街工作，这样自己就有足够的钱可以专心表演。

作为移民的孩子，格里罗从来都知道自己必须努力，只有努力坚持才可能改变。

最开始，他经常在影视剧中打酱油，直到在《越狱》（Prison Break）中出演律师Nick Savrinn后才渐渐得到认可。
2011年的电影《勇士》（Warrior），他终于得到了一个重要角色，饰演男主的教练，一个搏击大师。他的动作戏和演技着实圈了不少粉丝。
2012年他与英伦硬汉、自己的偶像连姆•尼森共同主演电影《人狼大战》(The Grey)。
最让小伙伴们熟悉的恐怕是《美国队长2》（Captain America: The Winter Soldier）中他饰演的大反派交叉骨（Crossbones）了。但那时他已经年近50岁了。
之后他又在美剧《搏击王国》（Kingdom）中担任了主演，着实让人热血沸腾。

大银幕上拳脚到位、手下无情、看得人血脉偾张，台下却是30多年的苦练和准备。
格里罗曾在接受MMA Weekly网站采访时谈到，自己从小就练习摔跤，18岁时开始打拳击。后来他遇到了巴西柔术大师里克森•格雷西，跟他学习训练并参加比赛。回到纽约后，他和马卡多兄弟一起训练。35年大部分时间都在训练。采访当日，他其实刚练完拳击，打了15回合。如今训练已经成为他生活的主要部分。

I trained with Rickson for many years and continued to box. I travelled around a little bit and did some competitions with the Gracie team. I came back to New York and trained with the Machado brothers. I’ve been training for the better part of 35 years. I actually just got back from training boxing and did about 15 rounds today. It’s a big part of my life.”
